The coming of age of sole trusteeship – report

Sole trusteeship is on the rise and larger schemes are increasingly adopting a sole trustee governance approach to manage DB pension schemes. The market has doubled in the last few years and we estimate that DB schemes governed by sole trustees are perhaps 20% or more of the overall DB universe in 5 years’ time.

As the sole trusteeship market starts to come of age we look at the introduction of the professional corporate sole trustee; the drivers for employers adopting the model and potential alternatives; the possible benefits and downsides of the model; and how to go about appointing and onboarding a sole trustee.
